Try ironing it on, and hand sewing around it. That's what I have to do on mine, since the machine scares the carp out of me.
One thing you can do to help learn, is draw squigly lines and circles and shapes on paper, removee the needle on the machine, and practice sewing on the lines. It helps.

In it's own way it's very cute. Try going around your design with a satin zigzag stitch. Works better than the straight stitch.
